When she came to the farm, Joey was no more than a baby herself, so its hard to believe she was ready to give birth. Her due date stuck in our mind, Cinco de Mayo (May 5th), but she must have been ready because she pushed her first calf out a week early and like an old pro. The heifer has been born into the nicest weather we've had since last fall. Its exciting to see all this new life around us as we work around the farm.
Only last week, we turned the cows back out onto pasture. The morning after the late-night birth we moved the cows to a paddock better suited to the young calf, and she needed some assistance in getting there. She's getting stronger, though, and we notice her moving around more on her own each day.
